HISTORY
Within hours of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Director of the U.S. Mint, Eva Adams, spoke with Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts about a coin depicting and memorializing Kennedy. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy selected the half dollar for the coin’s denomination.
Approximately one month after his assassination, the Kennedy half dollar was approved by Congress. These coins were extremely popular and hoarded in their release, which was obvious considering all 70,000 coins sold out in the first day.
